Next iPad mini Could Be Apple’s First Water-Resistant iPad

Apple is reportedly developing a next-generation iPad mini with stronger water resistance, potentially enabled by a speaker system that removes conventional speaker openings.

The compact tablet could arrive as early as October 2026. However, Apple has not announced the device or confirmed its water-resistance rating, specifications, price or release date.

Apple May Remove Traditional Speaker Openings

The reported design would generate sound by vibrating flat sections of the iPad mini’s chassis rather than directing audio through perforated speaker grilles.

Removing those openings could eliminate one route through which water and dust enter the tablet. Apple would still need to protect its ports, buttons, and other seams before the device could withstand meaningful resistance to splashes or submersion.

Apple has previously explored similar technology. A patent filed in November 2014 describes a mechanically actuated acoustic system that turns sections of a device’s enclosure into sound-producing panels. The patent confirms that Apple investigated the concept, but it does not establish that the technology will appear in the next iPad mini.

The Current iPad mini Already Has a Limited IP Rating

The new model should not be described as the first iPad to receive any form of ingress-protection rating.

Apple’s European product information lists the current A17 Pro iPad mini with an IP42 rating. That provides substantially less protection than the IP68 rating Apple gives devices such as the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro, which are tested at depths of up to six metres for 30 minutes under controlled conditions.

The reported redesign would therefore represent stronger, more practical water resistance rather than the first numerical IP designation for an iPad mini.

Users should not assume the next model will be suitable for baths, pools or submersion unless Apple publishes a specific rating and usage guidance.

OLED Display Expected for the Next iPad mini

Reports also indicate that Apple could replace the current Liquid Retina LCD with an OLED display.

OLED would give the compact tablet deeper blacks, stronger contrast and more precise control over individual pixels. Apple already uses tandem OLED technology in the iPad Pro, although the company has not confirmed the panel technology, dimensions or refresh rate planned for the next mini.

Display quality has also become an important differentiator across portable gaming hardware, where manufacturers are balancing OLED image quality against processor performance and battery efficiency.

For reading and video, a better screen and improved durability could make the mini a more flexible media device as streaming platforms expand their multilingual and live content.

A Newer Apple Chip Could Improve Performance

The current iPad mini uses the A17 Pro chip and an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display. Reports suggest its successor will move to a newer processor, with the A19 Pro among the possible options, but Apple has not confirmed the chip.

A newer processor could improve graphics, efficiency and Apple Intelligence performance. That would follow the wider technology industry’s push toward faster multimodal AI models capable of handling more complex tasks.

Price and October Launch Remain Unconfirmed

Apple released the current iPad mini in October 2024 with a starting US price of $499. Apple’s US store now lists the device from $599.

An OLED panel, redesigned audio system, and stronger water protection could increase production costs, but there is no confirmed price for the next model.

The same applies to the reported October 2026 launch window. Until Apple announces the device, its specifications and timing should remain presented as expectations rather than confirmed details.
